Turning 40: Style, Growth & Choosing Joy on My Terms

Turning 40: Style, Growth & Choosing Joy on My Terms
Last month, I turned 40. And honestly? It felt like a full-body exhale.

Not because everything is figured out (far from it), but because I finally feel rooted. Clearer on what matters. Softer where I used to be hard. Stronger in the ways that count.

I celebrated the way I try to live—big joy, great people, a little sparkle, and no regrets. There was a Day Shift dance party that brought the house down, a sun-soaked trip to Schlitterbahn with my man and some of my oldest friends, a special staycation with my mom, the most thoughtful surprise karaoke party thrown by my friends, and more meaningful meals and quiet moments than I can count. But beyond the celebrations, this year quietly and profoundly shifted my perspective.  This birthday wasn’t just a celebration—it was a reminder: I’m surrounded by love, laughter, and the life I’ve been building on purpose.

Here’s what I’ve learned over the last year:

1. Protecting Peace Is the Real Luxury

In a world that rewards hustle and noise, I’ve learned that peace is my most precious currency. I’ve become fiercely protective of my time, my energy, and my circle. Whether it’s trading in my luxury SUV for a Honda hybrid or saying no to things that don’t serve me—it’s all part of choosing a life that’s more aligned than performative. There’s a freedom that comes with not needing to prove anything. To show up as you are, opt out of things that drain you, and know that quiet joy is just as powerful as loud ambition- this year reminded me that peace is a power move.

2. Style That’s More Than Skin Deep

As a boutique owner and stylist, I’ve always believed fashion is a gateway to confidence and connection. But this past year, I’ve felt the power of community in a deeper way—especially through the women who shop with me, collaborate with me, and inspire me daily. Supporting women-owned businesses isn’t just a tagline for me—it’s my lifestyle and my love language.

Owning a boutique isn’t just about clothing—it’s about connection. Watching women light up when they feel seen and celebrated will never get old. I’ve always said style is power, and this year reaffirmed that confidence doesn’t come from the clothes themselves—it comes from finally choosing yourself.

3. A Love That Grounds Me

This past year has been full of beautiful moments, but one of the most meaningful has been the relationship I share with my partner. Our love is steady, fun, deeply supportive—and it makes me better. I’m also lucky to be part of the life of an amazing teen girl through him. Our connection is something I hold close and protect fiercely. It’s not something I share publicly often, but it’s been a huge part of my joy and growth. Being loved this well and being able to show up for both of them? That’s been everything.

4. Wanting More (and Less)

I’ve learned to want more rest, ease, and authenticity—and less comparison, clutter, and chaos. That includes simplifying how I show up on social media (it’s not my favorite, but it’s part of the job),  and more alignment. I leaned into slower mornings, intentional friendships, and saying no more often. It’s been liberating to realize I can want less but live more.

5. Community Is My Core

Whether it’s styling my customers, connecting with other women-owned businesses, or just exchanging life updates in the boutique—I’m endlessly inspired by the community that surrounds me. These aren’t just transactions or followers. They’re friendships, collaborations, and reminders that we’re never doing this alone.

Stepping Into 40 With Open Hands

I don’t have all the answers (thankfully), but I do have clarity. This next chapter is about softness and strength, vision and values. I’m done over-explaining, overcommitting, and overlooking myself.

So here’s to 40. To quieter mornings and louder laughter. To better boundaries, deeper roots, and bigger dreams. To moments that matter more than anyone on the internet ever sees. And of course—to always, always having a great outfit on standby.

Thanks for being part of my journey—whether you shop with me, work with me, or simply cheer me on from afar. I see you. And I’m so glad to keep growing with you.

xo,
Emily
